See where your AI coding tool spend is going [beta]
Every AI coding tool reports usage in its own way: credits in one place, requests in another, raw token counts in a third. None of those add up, which makes it hard to answer two simple questions: what is our AI tool usage actually worth, and where is it going?
The new AI cost page answers both. It covers GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and Claude Code, and converts their usage into a single comparable number: token value, the list price of the tokens each tool consumed, including the overhead that agents add, like system prompts, tool calls, and prompt caching.
With one number that works across every tool, you can compare tools on the same scale, see which teams get the most out of them, and tie usage back to the work it produced. This is useful whether you’re an engineering leader deciding which tools to standardize on, a platform team running the rollout, or the person who has to explain AI spend to finance.
Here’s what you’ll find on the page:
- Token value over time: see how much value each tool has delivered across the selected timeframe.
- Teams and users: token value per tool for each team, next to AI-assisted pull requests merged, and the number of people who used AI tools. You can drill down from teams to child teams, all the way to individual contributors.
- Work tab: the familiar focus summary, now with an AI spend column that shows which issues and initiatives your AI usage went to.
AI spend in focus summary is where Swarmia goes further than tool-level dashboards. Instead of stopping at who used the tools, Swarmia spreads each person’s daily AI usage across the issues and pull requests they contributed to that day, in proportion to their effort.
A few ways to put it to use:
- See whether your AI spend is landing where the work is. Open the work tab, or the AI spend column in the focus summary, to see the work behind the number.
- Spot teams that aren’t getting the most out of their tools. Low token value next to a full set of licenses is useful to look at alongside idle seats in AI adoption.
- Find out what your subscription plan is really worth. Token value shows the list price of what your teams consumed, so you can tell whether a usage-based plan or a flat subscription is the better deal.
To get started, navigate to AI tools → AI cost, and you’ll see data for every AI coding tool you’ve connected. AI cost is in beta, so tell us what’s missing at hello@swarmia.com.
